La serie presenta interviste a 79 testimoni, tra cui molti americani che hanno combattuto in guerra o vi si sono opposti, così come combattenti e civili vietnamiti sia del Nord che del Sud. Burns ha deliberatamente evitato di mostrare interviste a storici o altri esperti e interviste a schermo di personaggi noti come John Kerry, John McCain, Henry Kissinger e Jane Fonda. Invece, le interviste avevano lo scopo di fornire una visione di base della guerra dal punto di vista della gente comune che la viveva.
Le canzoni della colonna sonora di The Vietnam War
Trent Reznor e Atticus Ross, dei Nine Inch Nails, sono stai incaricati sia di comporre le musiche originali (L’album su Amazon) della serie che di scegliere delle canzoni pop che fossero rappresentative del periodo. Il sito web della PBS descrive la serie come caratterizzata da “oltre 120 canzoni popolari iconiche che definiscono l’era”, incluse canzoni di artisti contemporanei. Di questi, 38 canzoni sono state selezionate per l’album della colonna sonora della serie, che è stato rilasciato il 15 settembre 2017.
